Whizzed through the Capital

Thursday, November 8th, 2007
Killens Pond, Delaware to Springfield, Virginia

162.2 miles
Mostly cloudy, very chilly

Actually, the drive today was only 111 miles, but that was to my intended destination, not where the ‘house’ really ended up! The short drive, through Baltimore outskirts and Washington D.C. and Arlington outskirts, took me to my girlfriend’s home in Springfield, except there wasn’t room to park there after all, when she saw the coach in person. So her contractor (she’s getting her house renovated) was unbelievably kind enough to offer a spot at his place where I could plug in and be safe! Sweet!!

Candy and I were pals way back in the early 70s in California. I introduced her to the man she married! We haven’t seen each other in about 30 years! And we leave this weekend for Florida, where we board the Caribbean Princess for a week long cruise to St Maarten, St Thomas and Princess Cays. Sunshine on the ocean!!!!!!!!

Anyway, back to the drive – it was a pleasure driving thru the Delaware countryside – the farms have bigger fields than I’ve seen for a long time, and the crops are still green. Plus, I’m back in the land where almost everyone has a flag flying!

I was prepared for the worst, knowing I was going into two large metropolitan areas, and overall really lucked out! One short stretch of freeway near D.C. was all bollixed up, but otherwise it was an easy sail!

Was surprised to see the First National Bank of Wyoming in Maryland, then realized there is a town called Wyoming there!

I have to chuckle at the ‘powers that be’ in Maryland – they have made the effort to post signs in all historic spots, with a few appropriate phrases about whatever the event. But these signs are only about two foot square, with very small print, posted on the side of the road with no parking available anywhere near them. You haven’t a chance of reading more than one or two words of the sign as you whiz by! But at least they are there!

This is another area that shrink wraps their pleasure boats to winterize them. Big business!!

Then there’s the big sign saying “aggressive driver imaging in use for your safety!”

Terrific to see my old pal – and she lives in a beautiful neighborhood, with lots of color still in the trees. But there were ‘wet snow flurries’ scattered through the area last night! Yucky!

This is going to be a great trip, getting caught up on 30 years, in THE most pleasant of surroundings! The brochure says we will have occasional internet access, so I’ll make an attempt to keep this silly blog current . . . please understand if I go dark for a while!

Tropical sunshine! I can’t wait!!
